Each Wednesday I head down to the quaint little village of Baddeck, which is only about 15 minutes from home, and set up for the farmer’s market there. What a joy, and what a difference from the Cruise Ship gig…..i used to get up a 5.30am, drive to Sydney, and set up in a rather characterless space, and sit from 8am till 4pm – and sell a few things. Not that I’m complaining, anyone who has read previous posts here knows my very mixed feelings about it….anyway, suffice to say that the Baddeck Farmer’s Market is so much more enjoyable….
This is the difference between dealing with your more local situation and a tourist audience! Here, in Baddeck, not only do i get to meet a lot of the local inhabitants, which is just so wonderful…..i mean, the librarian, the massage therapist and the guy that runs the local paper….it’s just so cool!
For example, here is Brooke, who has an amazing farm in Middle River, he raises all sorts of organic vegetables, and animals…this is a guy who truly is in touch with what is going on with his cows, chickens, goats, pigs etc….a truly gifted (all be it a bit on the crazy side 🙂 ) farmer guy who really wants to spread the wealth and health of his endeavors! I really admire what he and his family are doing…..his wife Kate is one of the best librarians I’ve ever met…..along with Larry and Laverne of course !
I took this shot around 12.30 – and there was a good enough lull in the crowd for me to wander around taking photographs….up until then the place was in fact packed with people! They started browsing and buying around 10.45am….we don’t open till 11am….and there was a great flow of people most of the time.
you couldn’t meet a more interesting and creative group of people… i love the diversity, the generosity of spirit, everyone pitching in to help each other….and people who are trying to live of the product of their own hands and labour….truly a wonderful community to be engaged with.
So, if you’re in the Baddeck area, every Wednesday from 11am to 2pm, you can find Cora-lee and George selling their homemade, mouth-watering sausages, plus letting you know what amazing food they prepare and serve at their establishment…Dancing Sprite Restaurant out in Middle River, Sue is selling wonderful vegetables, flowers and herbs, Terry with his beautiful wooden spoons, and many more amazing vendors, waiting to tempt you!!! Plus me with my pottery!!!
